I have summered in Bethany my entire life, and have owned property since 1967, when my husband and I inherited my parents’ 2nd Street. Cottage, which they had purchased in 1945. I worked for B.B. businesses during the summers, as did my children in later years. Born and raised in DE Co., PA, I earned a BA degree in mathematics from Immaculata U., and was employed by G.E. Co. in the Aerospace Division. We raised five children, two of whom came to us at the ages of seven and ten years from the Republic of Korea, speaking no English. I worked for our local school district, and volunteered in the community, schools, and church. A permanent resident since 1997, I presently serve on the boards of the BBLA & Farmers' Market, & am the F.M. volunteer coordinator. I am a member of the Communications, Intergovernmental, & Cultural & Historic Affairs Committees, B.B. Historical Association, & am a museum docent. In addition to seving as secretary for the Women's Civic Club, I mentor at Frankford School, read weekly to children for Read Aloud DE, & volunteer yearly for the Beach & Bay Cottage Tour. A member of St. Ann's Pastoral Council, I participate in several parish activities. I am a member of the American Association of University Women. The preservation of Bethany Beach as a quiet, family oriented town is my highest priority. This objective was overwhelmingly expressed in the responses to the 2004 Citizens Participation Questionnaire. The influx of visitors from the huge developments west of Rt. 1 is seriously threatening our way of life. Traffic congestion, over-crowding of our streets and boardwalk, increased danger to pedestrians and cyclists, along with greater financial expenditures for public facilities are resulting from this irresponsible building. Developers have formulated no plans for the infrastructure demanded by these new communities. We must work with our coastal neighbors, and the towns along routes 26 and 54, toward dealing with, and discovering solutions to this situation which affects all of us. Our finances are another high priority. Due to the escalating cost of living in the past couple of years, which includes electricity, our property taxes, the impending water rate increase, along with other expenses, we must seriously analyze future expenditures, carefully differenciating between our needs and our wants. |
