Updated 08/27/07 PRAYER TO THE SPIRIT O Spirit of God, and God of the Spirit, We remember the many ways You have touched our lives, transforming us and leading us to fulfill Your mission. We celebrate the power and the presence of the Holy Spirit among us. We believe that the Spirit calls us to continue the work of God in the world and through the Church. We believe that the Spirit transfigures us from within and we are grateful. We believe that you will empower us to be Your Presence to each other and to all those with whom we meet. We pray now for continued hope and confidence that you will continue to generously pour out your gifts. We pray for courage that we may remain committed to the vision of a stronger Church, and for strength that we may work tirelessly to fulfill Your will. We pray all of this in thanksgiving, and in the name of Jesus, our friend. |
< 08/01/07 An Op-Ed piece by Sister Maureen Paul Turlish of New Castle VOTF on the passage of DE SB 29 appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer yesterday morning. Here's hoping it will encourage legislators in PA to take up the cause. 06/08/07 Dear Friends of VOTF: Please join us on Thursday (note the change in our usual meeting day), June 21 at 7:00 PM at the South Coastal Library in Bethany Beach. Our guest that evening will be Dr. Robert West, assistant professor of accountancy at Villanova University. His topic will be: “Internal Financial Controls in the U.S. Catholic Church: Policies for Transparency and Accountability." Dr. West made national headlines recently when he and Dr. Charles Zech published the results of a survey done by the Center for Church Management at Villanova which found that 85 percent of Roman Catholic dioceses responding to the survey had discovered embezzlement during the past five years, with 11 percent having been embezzled out of more than a half-million dollars each. This is an excellent opportunity for us to learn more about how we can work for financial accountability in our church. Please come and bring a friend! A flyer is attached so you can help spread the word. With fiercest hope, Skip Sullivan See the following link to read about the results of Dr. West's survey prior to our meeting. http://www.villanova.edu/business/newsmedia/news.htm?page=121306_churchfinances.htm ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 06/10/07 Dear Friends, I want to forward this message from Sr. Maureen of New Castle VOTF. In it she repeats some information I gave you yesterday about her commentary in the News Journal. But she also adds a link so that you can hear Sen. Peterson and Rep. Hudson on the radio tomorrow. Please sign on or tune in the old fashioned way! Skip Sullivan ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Happy Separation Day 2007! After reading the Delaware News Journal online this morning, where there are two more "letters" supporting Senate Bill 29, I added a long commentary on what untruths were written in this week's catholic newspaper, The Dialog. Both the letters and commentary can be found at: http://forums.delawareonline.com/viewtopic.php?t=41389 I went down to Old New Castle for my walk today because it's Separation Day. While sitting waiting for the parade to begin, I looked around noticing all the families with children and remembered I still had about 300 flyers supporting Senate Bill 29 and our coalition, ChildVictimsVoice.com, still in the car. I went to the car, found them and distributed them as far as they went. What an opportunity! I said hello to both John Carney, the Lieutenant Governor and Senator Dori Connor, who were both in the parade as well as U.S. Senator Thomas Carper, who tempered my enthusiasm by reminding me he was in Washington now. I told them all that Tuesday, June 19 is THE date (afternoon probably, but no time yet) for the bill to go before the full house. It will really be a full court press, end run, final stretch or whatever sport's metaphor you want to use. I hope everyone remembers that both Senator Karen Peterson and Representative Deborah Hudson will both be on the Gerry Fulcher talk Show on Monday, June 11 at 3 p.m. It can be listened to, live and online, at http://www.wdel.com If you haven't added you name to the coalition web site or left a comment or two, it isn't too late. Just go to www.childvictimsvoice.com Again, Happy Separation Day. Sister Maureen // Letters and comments also here (ed) // -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 06/09/07 Dear Friends of VOTF: We have a definite date for the House hearing on SB 29--June 19--time to be announced, but most likely in the afternoon. Please plan to be there. The bill is under attack by the Diocese of Wilmington and other special interest groups, and we need to show up in numbers to express our support! In the meantime, please keep this call for justice in your prayers. Also, two letters to the editor about SB 29 appeared in this morning's News Journal, as well as a post from Sr. Maureen Turlish in the "Story Chat" of the online Opinion section of the paper. See the link below to access them directly or download the copy I've attached below. Sr. Maureen is as direct and articulate as ever in laying out the diocese's underlying motives in opposing portions of the bill. Other members of our group have written to both The Dialog and The News Journal to express their opinions. How about you? With fiercest hope, Skip Sullivan Click here: delawareonline ¦ The News Journal, Wilmington, Del. ¦ Our Readers' Views For the latest updates on SB 29 don't forget www.childvictimsvoice.com -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear All, If you have a chance please read the catholic paper of the Wilmington Diocese, The Dialog. The coverage of Senate Bill 29 is simply untrue. SB 29 has been crafted to cover all children in all situations and in all schools.
