Recycling Program

The Town of Bethany Beach offers a curbside recycling program that began Town-wide in January 2008.

Most participants in the program received a 65 gallon wheeled container (both 35 gallon and 95 gallon containers are available by request), which will act as a common container for all the below listed recyclable materials:

Recyclable materials defined as:  newspapers, brown paper bags, magazines, catalogs, telephone books, soft cover books, junk mail, envelopes, paper, paperboard (cereal and tissue boxes), cardboard, narrow-neck plastic bottles, milk jugs, bleach/detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, glass of any color, and metal cans including tin, steel and aluminum, may be mixed in one container.  According to the Delaware Solid Waste Authority (DSWA), you recycle numbers:  1, 2, 4, 5 and 7.

Pickup time for recycling are as follows:

Zone 1 (east of Route 1):

From the second Monday in May through September, pickup is every Wednesday.
From the first Wednesday in October through the first Monday in May, pickup is every other Wednesday.

Zone 2 (west of Route 1)

From the second Monday in May through September, pickup is every Thursday.
From the first Wednesday in October through the first Monday in May, pickup is every other Wednesday.

Place recyclables out before 7:00 a.m. in the same location you put your regular trash for pickup.  This should always be in the alley, if the property has alley access.

The following materials may NOT be recycled as part of this curbside recycling program: Any hazardous materials, household hazardous wastes, oil, petroleum or grease wastes, chemical wastes, dry waste, construction and demolition wastes, food wastes, yard wastes, oil filters, batteries, tires, appliances, electronic goods, and toxic wastes.

Special arrangements must be made for communities that share a common dumpster.  A representative of the condo or homeowner's association will need to work with the Town concerning the number, size and placement of recycling containers.  Should your association wish to participate in the recycling program please contact the Town at (302) 539-8011.

Yard waste materials (plant material resulting from lawn maintenance and other horticultural gardening and landscaping activities such as grass clippings, leaves, prunings, brush, shrubs, garden material, branches, Christmas trees and tree limbs up to 4 inches in diameter) must be placed in a container clearly marked "Yard Waste" or in paper yard waste bags.  Limbs must be tied into bundles no larger than 4' in length an 2' in diameter.   From April through December, yard waste will be collected every Friday.  From January through March, yard waste will be collected every other Friday.  Yard waste placed in regular plastic bags or biodegradable plastic bags will NOT be collected.
