Candidate for the Bethany Beach Town Council
Soon after being elected to Council, I initiated the Bethany Beach Cultural and Historical Affairs Committee. I continue to serve as chair as CHAC continues to work diligently to preserve the history and traditions of our much admired town. I previously chaired the Commercial Guidelines Committee as we worked with members of the Business community and our Planning Commission to form concepts for future building and/or renovating in the commercial areas of Bethany Beach. Over time this effort will assure that our town center maintains its small town attractiveness. While serving as Mayor of Bethany Beach, I had the privilege of representing our town with our state and federal government as we sought funding for beach replenishment. With the full support of our local, state and federal representatives, we were successful in attaining full funding and much needed sand for Bethany. When we were informed that Millville VFD would no longer be able to provide ambulance service for the Bethany Fire District, I again represented Bethany and worked with South Bethany, Fenwick Island, and Sea Colony representatives in negotiating our contract with the BBVFD as they planned for providing that service at very little cost to our citizens. Very recently I voted with other council members as we, after sufficient consideration, rejected the proposal by NRG to bring the high voltage power lines from the Blue Water Wind Farm through residential areas of our town. I also voted recently to support the US Army Corps of Engineers as they seek a plausible solution to the flooding that creates concern and inconvenience to so many in our town. Council diligently examined this issue before committing town finances to a problem that has been studied for years without any assurance of resolution. Soon we will see the first phase of our Streetscape project along Garfield Parkway completed. I am proud to have participated, with Council and our town staff, during this past year in moving this long awaited project forward as obstacles were presented and solutions found. I believe that team work is essential in meeting the needs of our town and its citizens. Varying opinions are important in coming to satisfactory conclusions, and must be tempered with mutual respect in approaching issues and seeking how to best keep Bethany the town we all love and appreciate. That, in my view, is key in being a productive member of council. If I can count on your vote again this year, you can count on my continuing to serve in this way. Carol Olmstead |
