Smoking on beach, boardwalk, bandstand, and playgrounds.
Our Town Council held a Public Hearing on November 16, 2007 in order to listen to our citizens' opinions on this subject.  The response from the public was estimated to be approximately 50% in favor of the ban and a like number opposed to the ban.  Town Council is expected to vote on this matter during the February, 2008 Town Council Meeting.  It is very important that you voice your opinion of a smoking ban on our beach, boardwalk, bandstand, ocean, public parks and playground.  Write a letter supporting your position and mail it to:  Bethany Beach Town Council, P.O. Box 109, Bethany Beach, DE 19930.

Beach Replenishment Project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has provided a new dune and beach in Bethany Beach and South Bethany.  Our beach replenishment project began on September 24, 2007 at 5:30 p.m. EDT.  The beach now has a dune that is approximately 1 mile in length, 100' in width from east to west and about 15' above sea level.  The new beach will be between 200' and 225' wide from the ocean to the boardwalk.  Crossovers, dune grass and fencing are currently being installed.

Town Manager Report

During the January Town Council meeting, our Town Manager reported:
The town received a $135,000 grant to place an additional 805' of pathway at the BB Nature Center.
The 2008 budget process will begin during February.
FEMA will have an onsite inspection of Bethany Beach on Feb 5th for compliance with flood prevention.  Certification will result in a reduction of flood insurance premiums.  Certification may take a year following the inspection.
The exterior of our water tower has been pressure washed and painted.
Extensive storm water work was completed in the Villas of Bethany West.
An ongoing maintenance project of opening and cleaning all town drainage culverts is in progress.
Dead and hazardous trees have been removed from the NW intersection of Rt 1 and Rt 26.
Building permit applications continue to be lower in December of this year (5) than last year (18).
