My wife Cherie and I purchased our
home in 1993. We have been full time residents for the last 9 years.
Cherie and I have 4 daughters and 3 grandchildren. We have been
community oriented and civic minded since we moved here. It’s a way for
us to give back to the town that we care so much about.
I have been on the Town Council for
the past 3 ½ years, having first been appointed to fill a vacancy and
then elected to a full term 2 years ago. In addition, Council elected me
Secretary/Treasurer. I have served on the Planning Commission, Trolley
Committee, the Transportation Working Group, Board of Elections, and the
Pedestrian Study Commission and presently, in addition to my council
duties, I am in my 7th year as a member of the Charter &
Ordinance Revue Committee. I chair the Budget & finance Committee, as
well as the Recycling Committee, and I have attended many governmental
seminars given by the U. of D. in an effort to gain as much knowledge as
possible on town and municipal operations.
The Town Council has accomplished
much in the past two years with beach replenishment, a long fought for
goal and achievement. We simplified absentee voting procedures, and
worked to protect non residents voting rights. In addition, we have
worked on and approved an agreement with the Bethany Beach Fire Co,
along with 3 other towns and Sea Colony, to provide ambulance service
for our communities starting in January 2009. Many other things have
been accomplished and the town has remained in good financial shape. We
are working hard to assure our financial future will look at least as
bright.
We have been given the permission to
widen our boardwalk 8 feet by DNREC. This is a once in a lifetime
opportunity. Anyone who has been on our boardwalk on a summer morning
knows how much it is needed. We have to accomplish this in the next
year. Funding can come from our own boardwalk repair reserve fund, which
the Town can repay with appropriate interest over a 5 to 7 year period.
With the new dune in place on the beach, the boardwalk is afforded much
greater protection from major storms than in the past. The Water Dept.
along with Streetscape and Storm Water Management are some of the
projects that the next council will look at. These are projects that
will require much debate as each requires funding
I have worked to maintain financial
stability with tight budget controls. Each department, Water, DPW, and
the town buildings are in very good condition and have long range
funding in place to replace and maintain them. In addition our general
fund has a very low debt service.
The present council has had special
meetings and public hearings, & many workshops. We have had mailings to
the entire town explaining the election process and absentee ballots, as
well information on how to sign up for recycling, a project that I took
the lead on for council, and of which I am very proud. This information
can also be found on our newly redesigned web site.
I hope you will allow me to continue
working for bike and pedestrian safety, the redesign and enhancement of
Garfield Pkwy, continued financial stability, enhanced methods of
communication between the council and residents, and to work with
Federal, State and regional agencies to improve our emergency
preparedness, to name just a few of the items that will need attention.
I hope you will vote for me on Sept. 6th so that I can work
for and serve you for the next two years.
Thank you.
