BETHANY BEACH -- To give candidates an online forum before the Sept. 10 municipal election, Mayor Tony McClenny has provided an Internet presence for each person on his website.

He started www.bethany-beach.net about 10 years ago as a hobby, and for the last eight years has set up a page for election candidates.

He said the town's official website has many limitations, including not allowing such a forum, and he believes its important for residents to be able to easily find information about those who are running for office.

While every candidate is informed of the service, not everyone takes advantage of it.  This year four of the five candidates have provided McClenny with personal information and a picture, which will be available for residents to check out up until the day of the election, he said.

"It gives them a space to have a web address and to be able to direct people to as much information as they want to put there," McClenny said.  "Since town couldn't do it, I thought it would be a nice thing.  It helps them out and I enjoy it."

Newcomer Tony Carmen is using the website as a way for people to get to know him and promote his goals.  He said McClenny's offer is helpful to each candidate because it's another platform to further their campaign.  "I thought it was very generous," he said.

Councilman Jerry Dorfman agreed it is a nice gesture by McClenny to put in the time and effort.  Since all candidates can participate, it's also fair, he said.

"He really does provide a service," Dorfman said.  "I applaud him for doing it."

According to the log numbers, people do visit and read the website, McClenny said.

Resident Lois Lipsett said it's a great service that benefits not only the candidates, but the voters as well.

"The more information you have about the candidates, the better," she said.  "I think it's a very good idea."
