The Bethany Beach Police along with the University of Delaware Community Traffic Safety have held a number of bicycle and pedestrian safety checkpoints. The focus of the checkpoints was to inform pedestrians and cyclists on safety . At the checkpoint area citizens were able to receive complimentary bicycle lights, bicycle helmets and information packets regarding bike and pedestrian safety. Attendees were also given the opportunity to register their bicycles with the Bethany Beach Police Bicycle Registration Program. Any questions regarding this event and/or how to register your bicycle with the Bethany Beach Police, please contact CPL. Rhys Bradshaw at the Bethany Beach Police Department 302.539.1000. The next safety checkpoint was held Friday, July 18, 2010 from 0900-1200 at the WAWA in Bethany Beach. The Bethany Beach Bike Safety program is funded by the Delaware Criminal Justice Council by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime.

Chief Mike Redmon " The Bethany Beach Bike Safety Program was implemented in 2005. We continue with our commitment to public safety and awareness by community outreach programs. Our bike safety program fosters a relationship with public safety and the community in whole".

The next time you are on our boardwalk, check out the new upgraded section east and north of the bandstand.  The first phase of a new material known as kebony has been installed.  This material is extremely resistant to the elements, rot and termites.  Kebony is created by treating southern yellow pine with furfuryl alcohol.  The process causes a change in the molecular structure of the wood, which makes it more stable and resistant to weathering.  The product is guaranteed for 25 years, which far surpasses the seven year life of the current pressure treated boards.

After months of our asking and not receiving  an answer (following a phone call from our much annoyed Mayor) DNREC gave us the green light to construct steps off the boardwalk at locations where there is no hope of moving enough sand to construct any ramps. Those locations are 2nd St., Hollywood and Parkwood Streets. The steps are now complete.  DNREC was on site the week of May 17th and will be back again to continue to push sand to ramps to make them more accessible.

While on the boards, go to Campbell Street and check out the trial "Mobi-Mat".

Since the dune construction, we have had ongoing problems with the crossovers being difficult for people to use and impossible for us to repair and maintain. We believe we will have those problems as long as the mitigation project and the dune stand. We may have the solution to the problem and we ask all of you to check out the “Mobi-Mat” that we have installed as a test at the beach access at Campbell St. The Mobi-Mat is 5’x50’ and retails for just under 4k in this size. The Mat can be rolled and stored off season, should be extremely hard to steal (but not impossible) and best of all makes the crossover very easy to use. Storm repair for beach access would only involve moving sand not the custom cloth/clay underlayment that was impossible to maintain. We will see how these work over the next week or so and may come back to the Council with a budget supplement for the purchase of multiple Mats. Please take the time to try the ramp and tell our Town Council what you think.
