The snowstorm of
February 6th and 7th dumped about 12" of snow on Bethany Beach.
Town streets were opened quickly by our public works department.
"The Canal" development was without power from early Saturday morning
until about 11 a.m. this morning. Some other power losses of short
duration occurred in town as well. The big concern at this time
would be thawing water lines, which could burst in homes that lost power
for any length of time. We have been told another smaller snow
storm is expected to hit on Tuesday/Wednesday.
The Bethany-Fenwick Area Chamber of Commerce
held a luncheon on February 5th during which they presented the 2010
Joshua M. Freeman Valor Awards. Bethany Beach Firefighter, Shane
Truitt, was recognized as "Firefighter of the Year" and Bethany Beach
Police Lieutenant, Rick Haden, was honored as "Police Officer of the
Year". We are very fortunate to have such individuals serving our
Town.
CODE RED
The Town of Bethany Beach provides emergency
alerts for those interested. You can go to the
"official" town website,
click on "Services" located at the top of the page. At the bottom
of the list of services, click on "Code
Red".
Once you sign up for the service, you will
receive a telephone call whenever an alert is announced (home and/or
cell). This system will provide you with a warning in advance of
most emergencies.
Beach and Dune Replacement Updates:
On December 18, 2009 our Town Manager, Vice Mayor Olmstead,
Councilmember Jerry Dorfman and I met with Senator Carper and Mr. Tony
Pratt, Program Administrator, Shoreline and Waterway Management to view
the damage to our beach and dune during the November storm.
On January
4, 2010 I again met with Senator Carper to continue our conversation and
request for Federal Government financial assistance for the repair of
our beach and dune.
On January 12, 2010 our entire Town Council
met with Mr. Tony Pratt, Program Administrator, Shoreline and Waterway
Management to discuss plans for the repair of the beach and dune. The
State of Delaware has begun making temporary repairs to the dune and
will continue to do so throughout late winter and spring with a goal of
replacing crossovers and the two missing sections of the dune while
continuing to attempt to obtain Federal financing for the U.S. Corps of
Engineers to restore the beach and dune.
Town Council is very
interested in removing the utility poles and utility lines from Garfield
Parkway from Rt 1 to the Bandstand. We have obtained estimates from the
utility companies and are moving toward a plan of action. We have met
with the Chamber of Commerce and will do so again as we work toward
enhancements for our downtown area.
Now that NRG has acquired
Bluewater Wind, we anticipate meeting with their representatives to
discuss their request for our consideration of the possibility of their
placing high power electrical lines through Bethany Beach.
